Hohenecken Castle, Hohenecken, Germany
Hohenecken is a beautiful, quaint village located a few miles southwest of Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Situated at the base of the mountain that houses Burg Hohenecken is the Hotel Landgasthof Burgschanke – the premiere place to stay in the village.

Wiener schnitzel and (like father, like son) wonderful German beer were among my favorite provisions during the two-day visit in April 1999. Please click here for a photo of the Hotel Landgasthof Burgschanke. If you visit Hohenecken and stay at the Burgschanke, tell them Herr Vincent Z. Whaley advised your stay!

Pictured to the right is the village of Hohenecken at the base of the mountain that leads hikers to the castle.

From the Burgschanke, begin walking to the right of the landgasthof and stay on the left side of the road until you see a church on a ridge to your left. The building pictured in the foreground here should also be visible. Make a left onto the cobblestone path pictured here. Hike to the top of the hill and the path will turn to soil. Follow the steep dirt- and root-laden path to the top of the mountain and introduce yourself to Burg Hohenecken – the ruins of a castle reportedly finished just after 1210.
