Starlin H.
Hughes and Wade J. Hughes were cousins
who served in World War II on different
continents.
Starlin served in the 9th Infantry
Division in the European-African-Middle
Eastern Theater of Operations, while
Wade served in the 8th Air Force of
the Army Air Corps in England.
After Starlin was wounded in the mouth
and side of the face on Sunday, Oct.
1, 1944, during combat in Germany,
he was sent back to England for surgery
and rest. Soon thereafter, Starlin
traveled to London, where he met Wade
for drinks.
Before Wade's death in 1994, he told
me that my grandfather and he had
a wonderful time that night and tried
to put the war in the back of their
minds.
"They took a photo of me and
Stard and sent it home to be put in
the newspaper," Wade recalled.
"We were pretty glassy-eyed in
that picture. We had drank quite a
bit. But it was a lot of fun to get
together with him in London."
